FCE- Fibrocartilaginous Embolism is a Spinal Stroke, happens when a piece of cartilage from the disk blocks blood flow to the spinal cord, causing a stroke. Symptoms usually come on suddenly, often when the pet is being active, and usually affect one side more than the other.

How long does it take for a dog to recover from FCE?
Most dogs will show a dramatic improvement in the first 3-7 days; however, maximum neurologic recovery can take up to 3-4 months. Statistically, about 84% of dogs with FCE will have a successful outcome. For large and giant breed dogs, the prognosis is more guarded if they are unable to walk.

How can I help my dog recover from FCE?
Recovering from an FCE can be a slow process. Pets that experience slow and steady improvement are usually able to walk within two to six weeks, but every dog is different.

Physical Therapy for FCE
Hydrotherapy with an underwater treadmill.
Stretching.
Laser Therapy.
Acupuncture.
Exercise.
