Thousands of people took to the streets of Amsterdam on Saturday to protest the government's plans to introduce further restrictions amid a new spike in COVID cases.

Protesters marched across the city centre with banners decrying the proposed COVID rules, requiring proof of vaccination or recovery to access the public places. The so-called '2G' rule would impede, therefore, the possibility to present a negative COVID test for entry.

The rally took place despite its organisers calling it off after Friday night's protests turned into violent riots in Rotterdam, with at least two activists hospitalised with bullet injuries after being shot by police.
