"Down On The Corner" Guitar Lesson + Tutorial | Easy 3-Chord Song with Simple Melody (Visuals + TAB)
Published at : November 28, 2021
Welcome to my "Down On The Corner" Guitar Lesson + Tutorial, by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). This easy 3-chord song is one of the easiest on guitar. I have simplified the rhythm, using the most common strumming pattern ever, to make it even simpler than the recording, and much easier to sing along to. On top of the basic chords & strumming, we will also learn the bassline/melody, which is really easy and repetitive. A perfect balance of rhythm and lead for a beginner, or any guitarist really.

The lesson begins with the chord shapes: C, G, F. Sometimes F can be played as a barre chord but I have one of the easiest fingerings for it which makes this a super easy 3-chord song. In fact, this song could be one of the first that you learn on acoustic guitar!
We practice switching between each of the chords, making sure to note the tricks that you can use when going between C and G and C and F. There's a couple tactics that help make those switches so much quicker and smoother. Then we play the verse using downstrokes only and counting along with our chord progression to make sure we play each chord the right amount of times.
After that, we take a look at the strumming pattern, which is the most common strumming pattern ever. We practice the pattern by itself breaking it down, counting it out and then we apply it to our chord progression. When switching from G to C, we need to switch during the pattern. So it's really important to follow the exact steps and make this as smooth transition as possible.
Once we've worked out the chords and the strumming pattern separately, we put them all together and we can play through the verse in a really simple way.
Next we learn the chorus which requires more splitting of the strumming pattern between chord shapes. We figure it all out, we work through it and then we play it together nice and slow.
Finally, we learn the melody or the bassline for this song. It's a really simple part, it's very repetitive, just uses a couple fingers and technically it's quite easy. We work out the notes. Then we work out the rhythm, learning how to count it so that you can play this with the right groove and feeling. We play the melody together. And that's it!
At this point you have all the components that make up the song. It's just a matter of putting together the whole thing. We go over how you would play through this entire song from start to finish.
If you'd like to practice the entire song with me, there's a full playthrough available on my Patreon page, where I play through the entire song, start to finish. More information on that here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/58273571
